Shutdowns in thermal power plants and waste incineration plants are short, tightly scheduled and expensive. Anyone who uses the overhaul to optimize the plant at the same time saves a second shutdown – but only if engineering and material are ready in time. This article shows which components around the boiler belong on the planning list and where the greatest leverage lies.
Lead time is decisive
The most expensive item in an overhaul is rarely the component itself, but time. Special materials, creep-resistant grades and fabricated components have delivery times that do not fit into the tight shutdown window. That is why a successful overhaul begins weeks or months in advance – with the survey, the engineering and a robust bill of materials. Those who bring design and procurement together early avoid shutdown extensions and makeshift solutions.
Components around the boiler
In the vicinity of the boiler and the flue-gas path, a whole range of components comes together that can be procured well as a bundle:
- Superheater and evaporator coils, spare parts in creep-resistant grades – often the heart of the overhaul.
- Piping and fittings for live and superheated steam, including flanges, bends and fittings.
- Wall boxes and penetrations, where pipes leave the boiler wall and are subsequently bricked in – in cooperation with specialized refractory and installation partners.
- Burners and sight glasses for firing and inspection openings.
- Valves, fittings and controls, matched to the line and the medium.
- Cladding and weld overlay as corrosion and wear protection on particularly stressed surfaces.
Plant optimization within the same window
A shutdown is the best opportunity to do more than merely replace. Typical optimizations are a material upgrade to higher-alloyed, more durable grades, additional wear protection at problem zones, or better accessibility through new platforms and walkways. The accompanying steel construction – supports, brackets, load-bearing structures – is also sensibly planned in the same step. In this way, pure maintenance turns into a measurable gain in availability and service life.
