Stainless Steel 1.4301 or 1.4571? Choosing the Right Grade

Anyone planning a stainless construction sooner or later faces the question: is the classic 1.4301 sufficient, or does it have to be the higher-alloyed 1.4571? Both belong to the austenitic chromium-nickel steels, both are non-magnetic and readily formable. The difference lies in the detail of the alloy – and that detail decides whether a component lasts for good or shows premature corrosion damage.

1.4301 (X5CrNi18-10): the all-rounder

The 1.4301, known to many as "V2A" or as the classic 18/8 steel, is the most widely used stainless steel of all. With around 18 % chromium and 8 % nickel it offers good general corrosion resistance, is easy to weld and polish, and impresses in visible applications with a clean appearance. For many standard cases it is the right – and the more economical – choice:

1.4571 (X6CrNiMoTi17-12-2): molybdenum-alloyed and titanium-stabilized

The 1.4571 differs from the 1.4301 in two decisive respects. First, it contains molybdenum – which markedly improves resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, especially in chloride-bearing media such as salt-laden air, road salt or process waters. Second, it is stabilized with titanium: the titanium binds the carbon and prevents harmful chromium carbides from forming at the grain boundaries during welding or at higher temperatures. In this way the material counteracts intergranular corrosion (sensitization).

When is the higher-alloyed steel worthwhile?

The extra cost of the 1.4571 is justified where the 1.4301 reaches its limits. Reach for the molybdenum-alloyed material – or alternatively the Mo-alloyed 1.4401/1.4404 – in the following cases:

The titanium-stabilized 1.4571 is particularly advantageous where thick-walled welded structures cannot be solution-annealed. The related 1.4401 and 1.4404 offer similar molybdenum-based resistance; the 1.4404 also scores as a low-carbon variant for weldability.

The decision in practice

What is decisive for the material choice is always the specific medium and the operating environment – concentration, temperature, chloride content and mechanical load act together. A blanket rule of "always take the higher-alloyed grade" leads to unnecessary costs, while the opposite reflex leads to failures. In short: 1.4301 is the economical all-rounder for visible and mildly corrosive applications. As soon as chlorides, corrosion-critical welded assemblies or elevated temperatures come into play, you are on the safe side with the molybdenum-alloyed and titanium-stabilized 1.4571 (or 1.4401/1.4404) – the final choice always depending on the specific medium.
